My inability to use the spare room exclusively as a nursery aside, I really want to create a happy, pretty space for my tiny one and I to spend time in. This is mostly for me, of course, since baby’s not going to care about what her room looks like for a few years at least.
But I care.
And so far, what I already have on hand or in the works will be lovely. The fabulous quilt top on the guest bed was made by David’s great-grandmother, and his grandmother finished the quilt as a wedding gift for us. My mother made the curtains and will likely contribute countless other pretties for baby to wear and enjoy. We may or may not be inheriting a crib David’s dad helped his cousin make years ago. I’ve asked Liz to make a mobile of red and orange paper cranes to hang above the crib. And I think my father is working on a rocking horse similar to the one he made for Chloe.
People with whom we have strong ties will be or already are part of this room, which delights me to no end. And has given me an idea.
I’d really like to have friends and family contribute to making baby’s room a happy place. When I go in, I want to see things that remind me of all the wonderful people who love me and my husband and our child. As she gets older, I want to show her all the little things people shared to make her happy. Sure, there are a lot of beautiful prints and knick-knacks that I could purchase and display, but I’d so much rather have the things in baby’s room hold some personal significance for us.
And so I’m going to step out of my comfort zone, be INCREDIBLY selfish for a moment, and ask for homemade pretties. I’d love to have a photo or drawing or toy or story or whatever else you want to create. Something small, that isn’t going to keep you up late at night to finish, that can be popped in the mail with little trouble. And don’t feel obligated…it would be fun but I won’t DIE if you decide not to send anything. But, knowing what talented and wonderful people you are, I really would love for you to make something for baby’s room (or for baby to wear or play with) and send it our way.
What do you think?

I like this idea. I was already thinking about what to send, and this gives me some ideas. What color scheme are you using?
Lydia says
What a fantastic idea! I'm in.

How fun! We'll start thinking. Any specific kind of thing you want?

Hey Jen, if you want a print of any of my photos just pick one and I'll email you a file. I have lots of flower images on my blog from the past few years. If you don't, I won't be offended. 🙂

Rach: The room is sort of aqua with red-orange (and some black and white) accents, if that helps at all.
Lydia: Sweet!
Em: Not really. That's up to you.
Katrina: That's a great idea. I'll poke through your blog and let you know. Thanks!

I have no creative skills, so I will just buy her clothes and teach her about puberty.
Jen says
I am so on board with both of these things. That said, you could totally do a paint by number…

i want to play!

No pressure for the mother who is to make "countless pretties". That said, I'm in too!!!

Huzzah!
