After a long hiatus from working on it, David and I were finally able to devote all day Saturday to the Master Swamp.
Side note: I realize that people (read: my mom and sister) have been anxiously awaiting a reveal post with the finished product, but the truth is it won’t be done for a little while yet. And that’s just talking about the general renovation, as in how we turned Shrek’s old bedroom into what currently resembles a ballet studio sans barre and mirrors. The details–furniture, textiles, etc.–are going to be a work in progress for who knows how long.
ANYWAY, like I said, we took a short trip back to Swampyville last weekend. My job was easy. I taped and caulked and retaped all the baseboards to prep them for being painted. I also supervised some of this action:
and a little of this action:
and got a little of this action going in the crock pot.
David spent the morning measuring and cutting pieces to make our new built-in closet fixtures.
Can I just take a moment and tell you much I LOVE having a husband who knows how to do stuff? Construction, plumbing, wiring, welding…he’s got a basic knowledge of all those handyman skills and I love it. Heck, he even made detailed 3D models of our closet plans so he’d know what materials to get and what cuts to make and exactly what it would look like with hangers on the closet rods.
Ladies. If the opportunity presents itself, marry an engineer. I’m telling you, they are useful dudes to have around.
So. Back to the closet.
After making all the necessary cuts and eating some lunch, David and Mila got to work putting things together.
She was thrilled to be part of the action. Especially when it came to drilling. Drilling was AWESOME.
Check out the precision pressure being applied by that tiny assistant’s finger. What a good helper.
Between the two of them, most of the shelving is finished. Once it is, we’ll smear the raw edges with goop to smooth them over, paint those bits white, put in some closet rods and any other finishing touches we can think of, and call it good. I’m thinking another Saturday–two tops–and we should be ready to move our clothes in. YAY!!!
Having gone from this:
to this:
is a start. And it feels pretty good.
Even if it is just an empty room, it’s a pretty and clean one. Progress. I likes it.

And her husband's clothes…and a gun safe…and miscellaneous storage…I'm just grateful to have space for it all!
Sydney Otto says
why is your daughter such a precious daddy's girl? i want one…..in the far future
Jen says
Oh she is, isn't she? She's like his little shadow. Every daddy needs one, I think.
Terri says
And I still love the color.
Jen says
Me too. It surprises me every time I go in there and I'm happy all over again.
e.m. says
I agree, love the color. And I LOVE the floor. I can't wait to see the final reveal of the master swamp.
