I’ve been saving bougainvillea for a “rainy day” situation. Only nine weeks in and already that day has come. I just didn’t get a chance to capture some other blooms on my list–too many other things to do–but since bougainvillea is everywhere and always gorgeous, I just stopped in an alley down the street and snapped these. I can’t say I’m too sad about it.
Bougainvillea has long been a favorite of mine. The brilliant leaves look like watercolor paintings from far away, and up close they look fragile and translucent. (Did you know those tiny white things are the actual flowers, not the fuchsia parts?)
But don’t be deceived; they’re hardly what I’d call delicate. Get too close and they’ll scratch you to pieces. They thrive in our crazy hot climate. I love a plant that is both scrappy and stunning.
I kinda like my people like that too.
Despite my plans to post every day this week, things just did not work out that way. I did, however, spend a good six hours scrubbing our floors on my hands and knees. And I did all that post-travel recovery stuff, like restocking the fridge and washing all the clothes and settling back into our normal routine. But I haven’t been online much–no complaints here!–so I’ll just fill you in on the haps around here instead of sharing fun links.
Mila is taking an art class through the city on Fridays. It’s great so far, but Margot and I have to wait outside till she’s done. In case you’ve forgotten, it’s ridiculously hot around here. So on Fridays I spend 45 minutes of my life getting all sweaty and keeping Margot out of the ants while Mila paints and cuts and glues and has a lovely time. The things we do for our kids…
Margot has recently become a bottomless pit. That child eats ALL THE THINGS, ALL THE TIME. She may be eating as much as if not more than I do on some days. Fat baby may not be a baby anymore, but she’s becoming a deliciously round-bellied toddler.
The last of our kitchen hardware has been installed, our tile is here, and I finally pulled the trigger and bought some sconces. Tomorrow will be a busy day. It was nice to take a break from remodeling, but now that I’ve had a chance to clean up the chaos a bit, I’m looking forward to finishing this project.
David and I have been watching the first season of Supernatural and I’m not sure we’re ready to commit to the rest of the series. Too much scary, not enough…I dunno, other stuff.
But with such a huge fandom, surely it’s worth the time, right? David
made the observation the other night that if someone broke into our
house, he’d be strongly tempted to chop the intruder’s head off and salt
and burn their body. Just in case. Vampires and demons and
ghosties…you never know!
We’re also planning an epic cookie bake-off. We are in our thirties. Shouldn’t we have a definitive fail-proof favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe by now? If you have one you love, send it my way and we’ll test it out and compare it to all the others!
Happy Friday, friends. See you next week!

I'll have to type up Dallin's choco-chip recipe and send it to you. It makes me hungry just thinking about it! The secret is using a chopped up Toblerone bar and it is delicious.

Mark and I have watched up through season 8 of Supernatural and I am riddled with fury at Netflix for not having season 9.
But! Just know that it's a pretty long road and Sammy and Dean never really get over their PMS-ing and it's a lot of emotions. Mostly sad ones. But the whole series is probably worth watching for Castiel (Misha Collins). I lurve him. And Bobby Singer. And all the kickbutt lady characters that never get to stay on for more than a season or two at best (let's not think too hard about it, Hope may go hulk).
TL:DR If you like scary suspenseful admittedly redundant soap opera drama then this is your show.

Adam and Emily have a really good cookie recipe. It uses shortening instead of butter, but my improvement on it would be to use butter-flavored shortening: the flavor of butter, but the consistency and non-meltiness of shortening.

Theirs is good…I totally forgot about that. I'll have to get it asap. For science.
