It’s weird what you spend money on when the world is on fire. And it seems like everyone has bought something completely random. I was going to call this post “Panic Purchases” but very few of ours have been last minute stress buys. They’re just…not super necessary.
For example: puzzles. Lots of puzzles. Hard ones. (This Hokusai one may be the death of me. I love it.) Up till now, we’ve only had simple toddler & little kid puzzles. I’ll be honest, I was thrilled to have an “excuse” to buy some bigger harder ones. And the girls have really enjoyed them.
We’ve also bought:
- overpriced baby clothes (To be fair, all Ryan’s hand-me-downs are the wrong season. Winter clothes in this heat? No thank you.)
- hair bows
- an entire at-home manicure set
- swimsuits (Where are we gonna swim? The local pools aren’t open. And who cares if I’m wearing the same one I’ve had for several years?)
- artsy earrings (that the baby will inevitably start grabbing soon)
- Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer (No regrets here. Such a good book!)
- tons of swaddle blankets
- small cacti & a planter for them (I already have so many unused planters…)
- cocktail mixers (We don’t drink?? But they’re really good in sparkling water or lemonade.)
- so much flour & yeast (It’s too hot to bake often but at least we could if we wanted to.)
- an ice cream party for my niece (But really for my brother and sister-in-law, let’s be honest.)
- games for the Kindle (They’re educational!)
I almost bought David a new suit when they were 60% off at J Crew. And I’m gonna buy some cute masks for the kids & I to wear when we start going places again.
I guess if we’re not eating out and putting gas in the car, we might as well splurge on weird groceries (looking at you, weekly Lofthouse cookies) and clothes nobody will see. *shrug*

Ahhhh we have so many puzzles happening at our house right now. I am so NOT a puzzler but my kids and Matt are super into it. More power to them!
I purchased an above-ground pool for the summer. From Walmart. (lol) Really quite impractical because it’s 8 feet wide and 13 feet long and our backyard is TINY. It’s basically going to fill up half of the yard. But in normal times we go to the pool every day. And although our local pool may open in some capacity in a month or two, I’m really quite devastated that the kids’ swim team season was canceled for the year. Getting this pool made me feel in control of something in my life. Although we haven’t set it up yet and it’s going to be a beast to maintain. Geez why did I do this to myself! hahaha

P.S. After many months, perhaps years, of not checking Feedly, I’ve started doing it. Reading blogs again!!! I think because I’ve been working at home, so using my laptop about 10x more often than I used to. So many things this pandemic is doing to me!

For what it’s worth, I still read your blog too. Do you think the pandemic will bring back blogging the way it was before everyone monetized and blogs got weird? I kind of hope so. And an above ground pool is a brilliant idea and maybe I need to get one too…
