When I changed our address through the postal service, I changed it for the whole family instead of for each of us individually. You can do that, apparently, and I figured it was the most efficient way to get things done.
Now the post office is forwarding everything addressed to anyone with our last name who used to get mail at our old address to our new address. That sounds confusing but it’s pretty simple, really. If it’s for Anyone B– and addressed to our old place, it now comes here. Easy peasy.
Except not.
See, all the utilities for Parkway (our old house) are in David’s parents’ names, since they own the place. All the utility bills are sent to Parkway, rather than to their own house, since whoever lives at Parkway usually pays those bills. And check it: David’s parents have the same last name as us. I know. This is SHOCKING information. Just stay with me.
Because David’s parents have the same last name as us, the USPS is lumping them in with those of us who moved, meaning that all the utility bills for Parkway (which are in their name) are now being sent to us. In fact, the utility companies have already been informed of the change and are sending bills directly to our new house instead of having them forwarded by the post office.
Do you see why this is problem?
We can’t just change the addresses for Grandma and Grandpa B back to Parkway’s address, because then ALL their mail would end up there instead of going to the house where they actually live. We can’t change their addresses to their real address, because then all the bills for Parkway would go there instead of to the people who will be paying them. And we can’t keep things the way they are, because I keep forgetting to take the bills to Adam and Emily (who are currently living in Parkway) so they can pay them on time.
The only solution I can see is to change our family address back to Parkway, then change just David and me back to our new house, and cross our fingers that it all shakes out the way it should have in the first place. It’s not a big deal–a few clicks on the computer and I’m done–but I’m SO ANNOYED that I messed this up at all that I don’t even want to mess with it.
WHAT IF I MAKE IT WORSE? I don’t know how, but I’m sure I could totally make it worse.
I should not be allowed to live my life without constant supervision.
