I keep window shopping for baby clothes because, well, I can’t help myself.
However, until very recently, I hadn’t purchased a single thing.
This is probably a Very Good Thing, considering that we are on a tight budget, I will probably have a baby shower wherein I will receive precious tiny clothes, I’ve already had a couple bags of things donated by friends and family members anyway, and babies tend to grow out of things quickly so it’s best not to splurge on a ton of cute stuff that they won’t ever get to wear. White onesies are quite sufficient for most days, if you ask me. Especially during summer in Phoenix.
But, good as all those reasons for keeping my shopping in check are, none of them is the real reason why I haven’t got hog wild at Gymboree or Carter’s or even Old Navy’s recent baby clothes sale extravaganza. The real reason is this:
I’m kind of sick of pink already.
There. I said it. I’m going to have a girl, and while many women would be delighting in all things pink and precious, I’m finding it a bit tiresome. Why can’t girls wear purple? Or green? Or–heaven forbid!–blue? Must they ALWAYS be dressed in frills and bows and pink pink pink?
Not that there’s anything wrong with girly things. I’m not opposed to them in the least. I just…like having other options too. So much so that I’ve also been peeking at boy clothes, wondering if I would be a bad mother for dressing my daughter in pajamas with trucks on them.
That said, when I found this:
I got just the tiniest bit weepy. Because it is darling. Also: not pink. Not even a little bit.
And now it is mine. It is the only item of baby clothing that I have purchased for myself. And I seriously cannot wait until she is big enough to wear it (got it in the 6-12 mos size) because I am in LOVE.
Am I the only one who doesn’t swoon over all the pink crap they sell for baby girls?

As long as you're not sensitive about people mistaking your cute little girl for a cute little boy, then go for it with the boys clothes! I happen to agree that little boys clothes are also adorable, having just had one myself and thoroughly enjoying dressing him every day. 🙂 I agree with you on the pink. It's nice and all, but let's get some variety!

Ha! I have a standing rule that I NEVER buy anyone with a girl pink clothing (or blue for boys). I typically go with really cute green, brown, or gray outfits.

I didn't buy ANYTHING pink for my girls, but everyone else did. So they ended up with a lot of pink. And then Abigail fell in love with pink, so she only wanted to wear pink for four years, despite my best efforts to fill her wardrobe with other interesting colors.
Then Juliet came along, whose favorite color is orange. Let me tell you–there's not a lot of cute orange clothing out there.
You know what I do absolutely love for little girls? Jeans with teeny tiny adorable little ruffles at the ankle hems. They are my favorite.

Oh. And another thought on baby clothes–I paid full price for everything for Abigail. Then realized that she outgrew her clothes at the speed of light. We spent SO much money on clothes first couple of years because she was growing like crazy. It seemed like every month or so, she needed a whole new set of clothes.
I've never been much for thrift store shopping, mostly because I don't like spending an hour looking for one good thing, but children's clothes are an entirely different story. There's a chain called Once Upon a Child–check to see if they have any in Phoenix, because it is like the best thing EVER. All name brands (most of which I couldn't afford to buy anyway!), all in perfect condition, for around $3-7 dollars per piece. It is the best thing ever. I even found brand-new bumGenius diapers there once for $6 each.

Jolena: Meh. If people think she's a boy, oh well. I don't think anyone's going to develop a complex over it. 🙂
Sydney: Yes. Yes please.
Kelli: Good call, my friend. It's so refreshing to see something that's not the color of pepto bismol.
Rachael: Thanks for the tip. I will have to look them up.
Jen says
Shelby: Yes it is. It's from Gymboree, if you want to check out the rest of the giraffe line (which is currently on sale).
