I recently added some holiday music to my iTunes collection. This will probably irritate me to no end when it’s April and random keep playing “Mele Kalikimaka” but for the moment it makes my heart happy.
Random semi-related anecdote:
My work friend Eddie sometimes sings–LOUDLY–while we’re working our very early morning merchandising shift. Everyone is tired and grumpy and the sun won’t be up for another hour or two, but you know what? When Eddie starts singing along with the “truck music” (it’s more upbeat than what we listen to during the day) or, even better, just randomly belts out show tunes, it makes everything better. And I said so to my other work friend Laura. Her response was to quote Toni Collette in About a Boy: “When you sing, it brings sunshine and happiness to my heart.” And it cracked me up. Especially since we then had to talk about the “lovely hairy jumper” Marcus makes her wear. Quality stuff, that.
ANYWAY.
My heart is full of sunshine and happiness and also Christmas cheer, largely on account of the following songs that I’ve now listened to several times each:
“Shake Me I Rattle” by Cristy Lane
“Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy” by David Bowie and Bing Crosby
“The Chipmunk Song” by…well, you guess who.
“Little Saint Nick” by The Beach Boys
“Frosty the Snowman” by Fiona Apple
“Silver and Gold” by Burl Ives
“2000 Miles” by the Pretenders
And on and on and on. ‘Tis the season to revel in ridiculously awesome holiday songs. I’m just doing my part.
Also, now I think I need to watch About a Boy. Mostly so I can hear Marcus sing “Killing Me Softly” but also a little bit to watch him accidentally kill a duck. That’s festive, right?
