Ten years ago David and I bought a bucket of Christmas ornaments at IKEA. They were inexpensive, and since we didn’t really have a “theme” for our Christmas decor (unless you count “we are poor newlyweds” as a theme) we figured red + silver was generic enough to last a while. We didn’t even get hooks for them; David bent some industrial nails into a sort-of hook shape and we used those instead.
It never occurred to us at the time that, because they were plastic, the ornaments would hold up to abuse from small children. But here we are, ten years later, with a full set of ornaments, makeshift hooks and all. In contrast, Margot decorated a glass ornament at preschool last week, and this morning it exploded into a million pieces.
Turns out our cheap spontaneous purchase was a wise investment after all.
Maybe someday we’ll have a fancy, over-the-top Christmas tree. For now, it’s nice to have one that isn’t too precious. My kids redecorate it every day and I never worry about anything breaking or anyone getting hurt. It’s not the prettiest tree but it sure makes us happy.
