Last week Margot turned one.
We spent the morning watching cartoons in our hotel room while waiting for David to wrap up some work in Indianapolis. Then we went to the airport and spent the rest of the day flying home. It wasn’t exactly a fun birthdaystravaganza.
But she loved crawling all over the terminal as we waited for our plane. And she did really well on our flight back to Phoenix. And she did get to eat a few bites of a cupcake.
Here’s the thing about Margot: she is, generally speaking, the most pleasant baby I’ve ever met.
As long as she is well-rested and well-fed, she’s content to babble and sing and chew on things and crawl around and entertain herself. She loves to snuggle. If she knows you, she’s absolutely delighted to see you. (I love getting her out of her car seat because her face lights up and she gets all wriggly like a puppy as if she hasn’t seen me in ages and is like, “Ohmygoodness! You’re here! Hooray!!!” Makes me feel like a rockstar.)
Yes, she has her moments. She likes to be held almost constantly, which gets exhausting. She’s been getting like 237 teeth all at the same time, so she’s cranky a lot more often than usual. She has had her fair share of sickness this year, which is never fun. Traveling messed with her schedule big time, so while she used to sleep a solid 11-12 hours a night (and has for months and months) she now wakes up at least once a night and insists on nursing before she’ll go back to sleep.
She’s not always easy; she’s not perfect.
But you know what? She is the perfect baby for me. She is exactly what I needed at this time in my life.
You know I’ve been fighting depression and anxiety and stress and apathy and anger and all kinds of other fun emotions, and quite frankly it sucks. But when I’m really struggling and my world feels like a hot mess, I know–if I know nothing else–that Margot loves me.
She is happy to see me and wants to snuggle me and thinks I’m the best thing in the history of ever. She gives hugs and grins freely, and it warms my heart every time she kisses my chin her her big sloppy open mouth. Her funny hair and precious dimples and goofy expressions and love of music…I just can’t get enough of her sometimes. Given how dark it can seem, I am unspeakably grateful for the light she brings into my life.
Oh my sweet Margolas. You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you. You are my sunshine.
