Lots of reading going on around here these days.
Some of us have longer attention spans than others.
We are nearly done with Little House In the Big Woods and will start on Little House On the Prairie soon. The girls love it but I may need a break from the Ingalls family after that one, just to shake things up.
Obviously every family is different, but I can’t help asking: at what age do you think it’s appropriate to start the Harry Potter series? Although Mila rarely has bad dreams anymore, she’s still pretty sensitive to “scary stuff.” I know she’ll like Harry Potter but I hesitate to dive in too soon. Maybe we should try a tamer fantasy series first?
What do you suggest?

Ida is super sensitive to scary things in movies (even still at age nine) but she was fine with Harry Potter starting around age six. She’s actually always been sensitive to scary things in books too but only things that could “really” happen (someone breaking into the house, etc.). The fantasy element is the difference I think, because fantasy doesn’t seem to scare her. Anyway… All kids are different but I would say go for it, at least with the first two books. They get progressively more intense after that.

You’ve confirmed my suspicion that the fantasy stuff will make it less anxiety-inducing for her. She seems to be okay with Star Wars so… With your blessing, Imma give it a shot.

If you find she isn’t quite ready for Harry Potter yet, our family has been on a total Roald Dahl kick lately. It’s not fantasy, but it has totally captured Mili and even my 3 year old Noah is sitting through the BFG while I read. (Also, the audiobook version of Fantastic Mr Fox is so amazing, we may or may not have now listened to it 6 times all the way through..)

Great ideas, thank you! The girls started listening to the BFG on our Cincinnati trip but never finished. I’ll have to pull that out again!
