Liz and Ben and David were all very excited about hiking during our stay in Provo Canyon. As mentioned before, I was less enthusiastic than they were. So while they made plans to hike to a certain waterfall, I made plans to meet my friend Katrina for lunch in Salt Lake.
I had a lovely time.
They did not.
A small thunderstorm rolled in that morning and reached them just as they were beginning the climb. What with the rain and the lightning and all, they decided it would be safer to go home and wait till the weather cleared to try again.
When the sun was shining brightly the following morning, they were all excited to make another attempt. I had no excuses this time, so I pulled on my hiking shoes, lathered on the sunscreen, and the four of us set off. David assured me it was neither a long nor a strenuous hike, and that the waterfall was very pretty and well worth the climb.
I learned two things during our hike:
1) “Long and strenuous” is relative. I don’t especially like hiking, so to me this hike was long, strenuous, and NOT FUN. I like nature. I like waterfalls. I have no problem with walking through nature to get to waterfalls. But CLIMBING STRAIGHT UP A MOUNTAIN through nature to get to a waterfall does not fall under the category of things Jen likes to do. I’m pretty sure I told David I hated him at some point along the way. Maybe more than once.
2) David is not human. He is either a mountain goat or a machine. He does not get winded. He does not get tired. He does not stumble or lose his balance. Ever. It’s unnatural. It’s also not fair. Furthermore, it explains why I can’t get pregnant. We’re different species so our DNA is probably incompatible, making reproduction impossible.
At any rate, I was grumpy and seriously struggling by the time we got to it, but David was right. The waterfall was very pretty. (I was not, though, nor did I feel like smiling. Hence, no pictures of me.)
Knowing how much David likes hiking, this probably won’t be the last time I drag myself up a mountain to make him happy. Because that’s how much I love him. I just hope it’s not for a long, long time. I much prefer the rivers and the lakes that I’m used to.

I love that hike–I once did it in four-inch heels. But I seem to remember that you opted to stay home…
Lydia says
Glad you lived to tell the tale.
Laurie says
Didn't you and I climb that once on a Sunday afternoon, and see a silhouette of a huge moose? Or was I with someone else.
Jen says
Rach: I…have nothing to say to that.
Lydia: Me too. (Honestly, it wasn't that bad a hike. I'm just a wuss.)
Laurie: Nope. Different waterfall. But you better believe I kept my eyes out for moose. Those things are FREAKY.
Laurie says
That's right, it was Timp (I forgot what it was called) but it was you right?
Jen says
Sure was.
