No, not the Brain Flakes, although those are fun too. I upgraded my camera!
I CANNOT BELIEVE I WAITED SO LONG TO DO THIS. It’s been a couple years since I started noticing the quality of my photos was dropping. I attributed much of that to having dropped my camera a couple times, or not having great light in our house, or my not practicing with it as much as I once did.
Those probably are legit issues, but also? It was just old.
I learned only a couple months ago that cameras have a shutter count. Did you know that? Kind of like the mileage on a car, it tells you how used your camera is. Every camera model has an “estimated lifespan” of how many photos you can take—how many times the shutter opens + closes—before it stops working. Mine was…high. Not as high as I expected, but after nine years and a whole heap of wear + tear, my baby was aging fast.
(You can check your DSLR’s shutter count really easily here. I also found this site helpful, because what the manufacturers say and how things work in real life aren’t always the same.)
With this new guy, I can shoot in lower light with less noise. Everything is so much brighter and sharper with minimal processing in Photoshop. Now you can see every stained fiber of my rug in every shot! Lucky you!
Yes, we’re halfway through a spending fast. It’s fine. It was time. Plus my birthday is next week, so… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Although let’s be honest, this will probably count for the next few birthdays and Christmas. Since we stuck to the Nikon family (my old camera is a D90) all my lenses are compatible, so we just bought a new body (a D750) instead of a full kit. Thank goodness too, because lenses are expensive.
Regardless, it was a long overdue purchase and definitely a worthwhile investment in my opinion. I feel like I’m taking crisp images again for the first time in ages. I actually want to practice + play with photography again!
Don’t mind me if I start sharing really photo-heavy posts because I’ve got a lot of practicing to do with my new lil guy.
What shall I name him?

Yaaaaaay!!! This makes me SO HAPPY that you love your new bebe so much!
I like the name Nik, but I also am apt to name inanimate objects somehow after their manufacturer (Large Maglite flashlight: Maggie; Vacuum: Hoovie; Large Samsung refrigerator that CANNOT get it’s ish together: Sams; etc.)
