For our last anniversary, we ate fast food bacon-egg-and-cheese biscuits, prayed the kids would sleep as much as possible, and drove 700 miles to be at my brother’s wedding. David had the wheel the whole time. He let me nap when I was sleepy and kept me entertained when I wasn’t. I felt selfish…and completely content to be stuck in a minivan for twelve hours with my best friend and the three beasties we’ve made together.
For Christmas, we decided to keep things small and simple to save some money for traveling later this year. I got him a book and a sweater. (Apparently I am Mrs. Weasley.) He got me a much-needed new computer. I felt so spoiled…and so humbled by the sacrifice he made to meet my needs yet again.
Because that’s what he does. He takes care of things. Fixes whatever is broken. Builds whatever is missing. Cleans up messes. Mediates when he can. Distracts when he can’t. Listens and encourages and advises and helps. Always helps. Always tries to make things easier, better for other people, even–sometimes especially–when it’s harder on him. He sees what needs to be done and he does it.
Needless to say, the man deserves a day to be spoiled and celebrated.
(Fingers crossed I can deliver on that.)
Happy early birthday to my teammate, my complement, my biggest fan, and my favorite.
I love you and I like you, David. You’re the best-looking grumpy old troll I know.
